The United States Air Force Academy is a United States service academy in El Paso County, Colorado, immediately north of Colorado Springs. It educates cadets for service in the officer corps of the United States Air Force and United States Space Force.

The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), nestled in Colorado Springs, Colorado, confronted a formidable barrier in its recruitment process. The financial and logistical burdens of travel were significantly hindering the Academy’s ability to attract a diverse pool of potential cadets. In pursuit of a groundbreaking solution, USAFA embarked on an ambitious quest to transcend traditional recruitment strategies. Their vision was clear: to forge a pioneering path that would reach potential cadets regardless of their geographical or financial constraints and provide them with insight into the Academy’s life and culture. The ideal solution is to use the metaverse, an immersive virtual world where prospective cadets could experience the vibrancy and spirit of the Academy without leaving their homes. However, the complexity and user-unfriendliness of existing metaverse platforms posed a significant challenge, thus hindering easy access for interested candidates.
The solution
In response, Designing Digitally, Inc. determined that crafting a tailored solution for this Metaverse campus tour involved building a customized Metaverse accessible through web browsers and fostering a multiplayer learning experience instead of shaping the project to suit a particular gaming platform, the platform tailored to meet the requisites of an immersive web-based encounter. Students conveniently access this comprehensive 3D virtual learning environment via a URL on major browsers.
Potential cadets can independently tour the campus within the metaverse and even partake in individual or group tours led by an admissions representative who adeptly showcases the Academy’s attributes. Interactive elements, such as clues, trivia, and non-player characters, serve as conduits for additional information about the Academy’s offerings. To provide engagement and collaboration, Designing Digitally created engaging mini-games such as basketball, hockey, flight simulation, and more offer an enjoyable and interactive means to encourage cadet engagement. Earned points from trivia and games enable the procurement of USAFA-branded virtual attire and accessories, with the ultimate prize being the coveted mascot uniform. Cadets can readily access the application through the Metaverse campus tour once they have chosen USAFA as their preferred institution. This approach facilitates swift and straightforward engagement, enabling cadets to seamlessly immerse themselves in the metaverse experience to solidify their decision to join USAFA.
