Lush Limited is a British cosmetics retailer which is headquartered in Poole, England. The company operates stores in 51 countries globally, as well as production facilities located in the United Kingdom, Canada, Croatia, Germany, Japan, Australia and Poland.

Lush, a global retailer with over 950 stores, was experiencing escalating challenges with labor efficiency. Store managers were having difficulty aligning staffing levels with actual business demands, leading to excessive labor costs and inconsistent scheduling practices. Although tools were available to aid in scheduling, many managers lacked the proper training to use them effectively, missing opportunities to optimize labor costs. Training for new managers was informal and varied by location, causing inconsistencies and misalignment with company objectives. Lush required a scalable, standardized solution that would equip managers with the knowledge and skills to create precise, data-driven schedules while controlling labor costs.

The solution

Designing Digitally, Inc. partnered with Lush to create a fully integrated and interactive training solution that transformed how store managers learn about labor management and scheduling. Through consulting, instructional design, and custom eLearning development, we developed a comprehensive digital learning experience that combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on application.

Our team collaborated closely with Lush’s leadership to identify existing challenges and gaps in current training methods. We designed a solution that not only educated employees but also provided ongoing performance support. The final product is an interactive learning program that seamlessly incorporates real-world scenarios, software simulations, and decision-based training, empowering managers to master workforce planning effectively.

The training features a virtual coaching system that guides managers through complex scheduling processes in a conversational and engaging manner, helping to reinforce critical decision-making skills. Additionally, it includes real-time simulations where managers can practice scheduling in a controlled environment, experiencing both successes and failures before applying their skills in actual store operations. These hands-on exercises ensure that managers understand the effects of their decisions and can confidently adjust staffing levels to meet customer demand while staying within labor budget constraints.

To enhance retention and usability, we designed the training to function both as a one-time course and as a reference tool for ongoing use. Managers can revisit the training at any time to review essential concepts or troubleshoot specific challenges, ensuring long-term effectiveness. The interactive modules include videos, scenario-based learning, and knowledge checks to reinforce learning at each stage.

We also collaborated with Lush’s operational and financial teams to ensure that the training aligns with business objectives. This alignment helps managers understand how labor decisions impact profitability and store performance.

The implementation of this training has significantly improved workforce efficiency across Lush’s retail locations. New managers now receive consistent and structured training, eliminating the inconsistencies that arose from previous mentorship-based learning.
