The Challenge
NASA, the U.S. government agency responsible for space exploration, saw the importance of providing its engineers with the necessary skills and tools to transition into project management roles, the next stage of the NASA engineering career path. Employees were missing key skills that needed addressing through more effective learning to reach more successful outcomes and easier transitions to employees moving to new positions.
The solution
To accomplish this goal, NASA teamed up with the Designing Digitally team to develop a custom eLearning course, “NASA Goddard Requirements Training,” that would provide engineers with the vital information to take on new responsibilities with project management promotions on the hard and soft skills required to be successful.
Our team kicked the project off by conducting an in-depth training need analysis to identify learning requirements and set KPI objectives, determining the skills necessary to manage projects to NASA’s standards, including project planning, risk management, leadership, communication, and teamwork.
Leveraging the findings from our analysis, Designing Digitally worked closely with NASA to ensure the eLearning course we built met all their unique requirements, solving the learning and development problems they were facing and aligning with the agency’s strategic initiatives. We built a custom 3D scenario-based eLearning module utilizing engaging learning activities inspired by real locations and job tasks within the NASA Goddard facility for learners to explore. Each room includes items and information for learners to interact with, focusing on specific hard or soft skills.
The eLearning course our team developed is a significant success for NASA. It gives engineers the hard and soft skills to transition successfully and excel in new job roles. This online experience allows NASA to offer cost-effective training, removing the need for in-person learning.
