The Department of Transportation agency responsible for America’s waterborne transportation system, the Maritime Administration (MARAD) is busy. At their core, they support the technical aspects of America’s maritime transportation infrastructure: ships and shipping, port and vessel operations, national security, environment, and safety.

The U.S. Department of Transportation faced a critical need for a comprehensive external contractor training solution to ensure captains and ship owners obtained the necessary certification for docking their vessels on U.S. territory. Compliance with this training was a legal requirement, emphasizing the urgency to develop a secure, accurate, and easily accessible system. Moreover, the solution had to be user-friendly on mobile devices, accommodating the limited internet access in various regions worldwide.
The solution
Designing Digitally, Inc. formed a strategic partnership with the Department of Transportation’s MARAD Division to create the innovative MARAD Cargo Contractor Training System. This collaboration included a meticulous investigation to determine the most effective training methods and deployment strategies, ensuring a solution perfectly tailored to the needs. Our efforts resulted in developing a cutting-edge training web portal that offers a secure, intuitive, and user-friendly environment for contractors to access vital course materials.
We also introduced a comprehensive Learning Tracking System to monitor contractors’ progression and certification statuses efficiently, simplifying the certification process. Our team also developed customized training courses that feature dynamic scenarios and crucial information needed for docking foreign vessels in the United States. Furthermore, the system is equipped to keep detailed records of certified ships and captains, which aids in verifying contractors’ completed training.
