Voltyx is an integrated solutions provider focused on guiding our partners through the complex modernization of the electrical infrastructure through vision, strategy, service, and support.

The Challenge

Voltyx, an electrical service provider, was looking for a way to deliver field technicians and inspectors with just-in-time learning where they could quickly share valuable information regarding their job duties. In the past, the company had supplied workbooks and printed data reports to staff, which were sent in bulk volumes and had to be maintained, managed, and mailed weekly to the office headquarters.

Voltyx needed an innovative solution to replace outdated training practices, providing employees immediate access to information covering procedural processes, repair and maintenance requirements, and completed job task reports for knowledge sharing, allowing staff to understand the progress made before arriving at the work site.

With many employees servicing electrical grids and transformer stations in rural areas, the training needed to provide local syncing and offline access to all information as wifi and cell connection are not available for searches or calls.

The solution

Designing Digitally developed the “Tech Talk Mobile Application” for Voltyx, enabling employee-generated content to be shared and accessed for various purposes. Employees can search on-demand topics based on specific needs, access content connected to geocaching data, upload videos and resources to share with other members and prepare for jobs by previewing future worksites.

The mobile application aligns with each employee’s responsibilities, offering valuable content related to scheduled calendar events and upcoming job requirements. The application also deploys Voltyx knowledge based on the location of employees, using geocaching technology to send helpful content over that location.

The “Tech Talk Mobile Application” delivers employees on-the-job, content-rich informational training and knowledge-sharing content that is auto-synced and offline for technicians to use at any phase of a job. The content ranges from procedural information, explainer videos submitted by technicians and inspectors, and micro-learning lessons offering small chunks of job-specific details.

This mobile application training is built with learner user tracking and performance analytics, reporting data to a custom-built web portal we developed so Voltyx can access valuable data on completion rates, usage, and the impact the application has on Voltyx’s L&D and overall business.

Now, Voltyx employees leverage several mediums of content to ensure successful knowledge transfer between technicians and inspectors, sharing the best steps to use at job sites, specific nuances, and mistakes to avoid, or issues that may impact another technician’s ability to work safely, efficiently, and accurately.

Through this mobile application development, Voltyx improves employee safety, compliance, operating procedures, and team collaboration by providing meaningful and relevant training. Employees are actively using this application in the field, deployed using a mobile device management system in cooperation with the company’s IT team to deliver the application to all company-issued and BOYD-registered devices.

The increase in safety and knowledge transfer data provided to Voltyx produced a 100% return on investment shortly after the tool’s launch. The company is currently expanding this tool to support other departments of Voltyx.
