SANDWICH MASTER SIMULATED SERIOUS GAME FOR CHECKERS & RALLYS
The Client
Checkers Drive-In Restaurants, Inc. is a chain of double drive-thru restaurants in the United States. The company operates Checkers and Rally’s restaurants in 28 states and the District of Columbia.
Sneak Peak
The Challenge
Checker’s/Rally’s, a national fast-food chain recognized for its freshly prepared orders, faced a daunting training challenge. Each new sandwich maker was required to master the preparation of all 25 entrees on the extensive menu. The existing onboarding process was protracted and lacked effective tools for managers to assess whether an employee was fully trained and ready to meet the demands of a fast-paced kitchen environment.
The solution
In partnership with Designing Digitally, Inc. (DDINC), Checker’s/Rally’s revamped their training program to better support employee learning and assessment. The new program consists of a structured sequence of training modules, each designed to build upon the previous one, gradually introducing employees to the complexities of sandwich and entree preparation. Starting with digital flashcards, employees familiarize themselves with each menu item in detail. A virtual tour of the sandwich station follows, helping them visualize and memorize the locations of various ingredients.
Practical, hands-on simulation is the next step, where employees practice assembling the menu items in a virtual environment. This phase includes a game-like component where employees must quickly and accurately assemble orders to meet game standards. Only upon demonstrating proficiency in this virtual setting do they move on to real ingredient handling in the kitchen, ensuring they are well-prepared and confident.
This enhanced training approach has transformed the onboarding process at Checker’s/Rally’s. Employees can now complete their training more efficiently and enter the kitchen better prepared. The practical, early exposure to the kitchen setup and menu details reduces initial errors and speeds up the overall competence in real-world tasks. Managers, in turn, are equipped with concrete performance data from the training modules, allowing them to make informed decisions about when an employee is truly ready to handle the kitchen’s fast pace. This data-driven approach replaces subjective judgment, standardizes training quality, and improves the transition of new hires into competent team members.
