Exelon Corporation, the largest regulated electric utility in the U.S., aimed to strengthen its leadership pipeline by equipping managers with the tools needed to drive innovation. The company’s Learning and Leadership Institute (LLI) had an established instructor-led training program. Still, they required a scalable, engaging, and interactive eLearning solution to reinforce key principles in a digital format. The challenge was twofold: ensuring alignment with Exelon’s strategic objectives while maintaining the active learning approach characteristic of traditional classroom training. Leaders needed a structured yet dynamic digital program that encouraged critical thinking, applied learning, and long-term engagement with Exelon’s innovation culture.

The solution

Designing Digitally, a leader in interactive corporate training solutions, partnered with Exelon to develop a custom web-based training program seamlessly integrated into Exelon’s SAP SuccessFactors Learning Management System. This multi-module, interactive eLearning experience replaced passive content consumption with immersive activities, reinforcing key leadership principles in an engaging format. The Support Innovation Adoption (SIA) training program consisted of five modules and nine lessons, totaling up to 90 minutes of interactive training. Each module was meticulously crafted, with scenario-based assessments, achievement badges, and gamified learner interactions. The program was strategically aligned with Exelon’s core competencies and behaviors, ensuring that leaders understood how innovation adoption fit within the company’s long-term goals. It incorporated key change management models, such as Everett Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations framework and the ADKAR model, to help leaders navigate the complexities of organizational change.

Beyond theoretical concepts, the program emphasized actionable strategies, guiding leaders through “The 6,” a structured framework outlining six key steps to support innovation adoption. The training embedded interactive exercises such as drag-and-drop activities, knowledge checks, and scenario-based decision-making simulations to enhance engagement and retention. Leaders could apply their learning in real-world contexts while also documenting their personalized “Take Action” steps and “Driving Change” plans, which were accessible and printable for ongoing reference. Additionally, the program was developed to be fully mobile-compatible, ensuring accessibility across devices, and was published in SCORM/xAPI formats, allowing Exelon to track engagement and learning analytics.

The Support Innovation Adoption training program successfully equipped Exelon’s leaders with the skills to champion innovation within their teams. Its interactive and engaging format significantly increased participation rates, enhanced knowledge retention, and improved the practical application of leadership strategies. The transition to digital learning led to higher engagement, as learners actively participated in gamified elements instead of passively consuming content. By incorporating real-world applications, the program reinforced learning, resulting in measurable improvements in assessment performance. Designed for seamless integration into Exelon’s existing LMS, it provided a scalable and trackable solution for leadership development. Moreover, with Designing Digitally’s flexible development approach, the program is built to evolve alongside Exelon, ensuring continued relevance as the company’s innovation strategies advance.
